Business Development Director position
for the Axia Institute: Delivering Value Chain Solutions. The position is to be located in Midland, MI.

 

Position Summary:

The Axia Institute® is a premier research and education facility dedicated to developing effective and sustainable solutions to enhance the performance of public and private value chains.  The Axia Institute was established in 2013 in partnership with Michigan State University (MSU), The Dow Chemical Company, and local Midland, MI foundations. The Institute builds on MSU’s strong interdisciplinary research capabilities by linking faculty from the Broad College of Business, Colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering and Social Science, on such important topics such as resource management, analytics, security and sustainability. The Axia Institute and Michigan State University (MSU) invite applications for a full-time, fixed term specialist position, Business Development Director, to help the Axia Institute leadership develop the Institute into a global and renowned Value Chain Center of Excellence. The position will report to the Executive Director in Midland, Michigan. Consistent with MSU policy, this appointment can be extended after the first year. Salary to be commensurate with candidate experience. The Business Development Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate corporate partnerships, memberships, commercialization, and technology to solve industry problems.  Identify, coordinate and integrate programs and projects designed to achieve Institute goals and establish milestones.
  • Attract Institute members by reaching out to companies to establish relationships, garner interest and commitment. Work with industry to identify high-value grand challenges requiring high impact solutions. Help to facilitate customer and executive events.
    • Work with industry to assess business performance to identify major industry problems needing high impact solutions.
    • Leverage MSU faculty resources – collaborate and coordinate across MSU units to develop and utilize novel technologies to solve industry problems across the supply chain.
  • Champion the research portfolio from conceptualization through the development of intellectual property to commercialization of research outcomes.
  • Develop and utilize novel value chain technologies. Lead Research Leaders, Principal Investigators, Technical Advisory Board (TAB) and students to success.
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and serve as the primary management point-of-contact with the researchers and funding agencies.
  • Secure external funding in the forms of grants, partnership agreements, and corporate contracts.
  • As part of the Axia Institute staff, develop and oversee business processes, including the stage gate process, bylaws and governance, membership contracts and agreements, capstone projects, and value chain assessments.
  • Other Institute initiatives and projects such as facilities management, project/cost management, building maintenance/renovation, and resolution of issues.
  • Maintain the Institute’s relevance by evolving the position’s job responsibilities as needed to grow the Axia Institute into a global and renowned center of excellence.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have an earned degree in business, an MBA, or relevant Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s with commensurate experience. In addition, five to ten years’ work experience directing strategic transformation in the private sector, government agency, or an entrepreneurial firm is expected. Experience in supply chain, strategic planning, project/contract management and budgeting are essential, along with strong leadership and team building skills. The candidate should expect to travel nationally and globally.

Intern Position
for the Axia Institute: Delivering Value Chain Solutions. The position is to be located in Midland, MI.

Concentration of studies in Supply Chain Management/Finance – Job duties will include but are not limited to: Creating and maintaining spreadsheets (making pivot tables, charts and graphs), website content, and helping with events.
